Built in the 12th century as the supreme jewel of the Hoysala capital of Dorasamudra, Hoysaleshwara is a dvikuta (twin temple) dedicated to Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara. The exterior walls are banded with eight horizontal relief friezes featuring 2,000 intricately carved elephants, lions, horses, and scenes from Hindu epics where no two figures are identical.

Built in the 1860s by French missionaries using mortar, brick, and jaggery, this church was abandoned in the 1960s following the construction of the Gorur Dam. During the monsoon, the reservoir waters rise, submerging the gothic arches until only the spires emerge; in winter and summer, the water recedes completely, allowing visitors to walk through the ruins.
